Cecil Terwilliger: Sideshow Bob's brother

CharacterCecil Terwilliger

Sideshow Bob's younger brother never got over being turned down at the sidekick audition for Krusty, in favor of his older brother. Springfield's chief hydrological engineer, Cecil embezzles the funds for a dam in "Brother from Another Series" (1997) to frame Bob who, in the supreme irony, saves the town. The high point of the character remains his casting: David Hyde Pierce, already Kelsey Grammer's warring brother on Frasier. Everything you need to see why this part is worth far more than a cameo.

Sideshow Bob's younger brother never got the top bunk. A qualified engineer eaten up by an old humiliation, Cecil Terwilliger proves that with the Terwilligers, holding a grudge runs in the family.

Here is the profile of an antagonist whose casting is a stroke of genius.

Who is Cecil Terwilliger?

Cecil Terwilliger is the younger brother of Sideshow Bob (real name Robert Terwilliger). He introduces himself as "Springfield's chief hydrological and hydrodynamical engineer". Contrary to a widespread belief, Cecil was never a television sidekick: he had auditioned for the job with Krusty… and was turned down in favor of his brother. All of his resentment stems from that. Cecil is not the only other Terwilliger in the show, either: Bob also found himself a wife and a son in Tuscany.

The Frasier meta-gag

The heart of the character is his voice casting. In the original version, Cecil is played by David Hyde Pierce — the actor who played Niles, the brother of Frasier, on the sitcom of the same name. And Frasier was played by Kelsey Grammer… who happens to voice Sideshow Bob. Two warring brothers on screen, two warring brothers on The Simpsons: a perfect nod, taken further still when the actor who played their father on Frasier comes in to voice the Terwilligers' father.

The dam affair

In "Brother from Another Series" (1997), Bob is released on work furlough into Cecil's custody, and Cecil hires him to supervise the construction of a hydroelectric dam. But the real culprit is Cecil: he embezzles the funds meant for the concrete and plans to pin the blame on Bob when the structure gives way. A delicious reversal: for once, it is Bob who prevents the disaster, and the two brothers end up sharing a cell, arguing over the top bunk.

🚿 The hydroelectric dam was meant to give way, since Cecil had embezzled the funds meant for the concrete; in your bathroom, our Simpsons shower curtains hold back the water without any Terwilliger getting his hands on the budget.

Cecil's voice actors

David Hyde Pierce reprised the role for a second appearance, ten years later, in a 2007 episode. The character is therefore not a simple cameo but a full-fledged antagonist. His French voice work, on the other hand, is not documented with any certainty.
