What remains is finding out why the writers kept him.

Who is Gil Gunderson?
Gilbert "Gil" Gunderson, known as "Ol' Gil", is a failed and chronically unlucky traveling salesman from Springfield, unable to hold down a job for more than a few days. Introduced late in the show — nearly eight years after its debut — he established himself as one of its most pathetically funny supporting characters. He owes his debut to the same episode as real estate agent Cookie Kwan, in 1997.
🍀 Against the chronic bad luck of "Ol' Gil", not even a pair of lucky underwear would work miracles; on the morning of your next job interview, though, our Simpsons boxers can still try their luck.
The champion of bad luck
Real estate agent, car salesman, security guard, department-store Santa… Gil goes from one odd job to the next, each ending in failure or dismissal. Jittery, sweating and desperate, he speaks about himself in the third person and begs people to help him or buy something from him. In the episode "Kill Gil", he takes it as far as moving in indefinitely with the Simpsons and abusing their hospitality.
🚗 Between firings, Gil even had a stint as a car salesman; as for your own car, parked in full sun, it can at least keep its dashboard cool behind our Simpsons sun shades.

A tribute to Jack Lemmon
The character is a direct pastiche of Shelley Levene, the salesman at the end of his rope played by Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross. Conceived at first as a single-use character, Gil was kept by the writers because his voice actor made them laugh too hard at the table read. Proof that a loser can have a fine career… on screen.

Gil's voice actors
In the original version, Gil is voiced by Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer), who explicitly drew on Jack Lemmon to build this "desperate, sweaty guy". In the French version, he was played by Michel Modo.
💦 The "desperate, sweaty guy" Dan Castellaneta voices in the original version could really use something to mop his brow; as for you, stepping out of the shower, you've got our Simpsons towels for that.
