Atop a pyramid, in a desert conjured out of a bowl of chili, an angular coyote orders Homer to find his soulmate. A look back at "The Mysterious Voyage of Homer" (season 8, 1997): the entirely fictional peppers of Quetzlzacatenango served in Chief Wiggum's chili, the candle wax Homer smears inside his mouth, and a dream casting — Bob Dylan turns it down, Johnny Cash accepts and speaks the part rather than singing it. One question stays open: mystical vision, or plain hallucination?

Who is Homer's coyote?
The coyote — often called the "Space Coyote" — is the spirit guide who appears to Homer during a hallucination, in the episode "The Mysterious Voyage of Homer" (1997). A talking, enigmatic creature, deliberately drawn in angular lines to heighten his otherworldly quality.
The pepper that sets it all off
Beware a common confusion: Homer's trip has nothing to do with drugs. It is set off by hallucinogenic peppers — the "merciless peppers of Quetzlzacatenango", entirely fictional — served in Chief Wiggum's chili at the Springfield cook-off. To swallow them without suffering, Homer coats the inside of his mouth with melted candle wax.
🕯️ Homer only uses a candle to wax the inside of his mouth before swallowing the hallucinogenic peppers; to light up your nightstand, count on our Simpsons lamps instead.
Johnny Cash's voice
The episode's real stroke of genius is its voice: the coyote is played by country legend Johnny Cash — who speaks the part rather than singing it. The writers had first thought of Bob Dylan, who turned it down; Cash accepted, giving the character an unforgettable gravity.

🧣 After Bob Dylan turned it down, it was Johnny Cash's deep voice that made the coyote speak; keep yours warm under our Simpsons neck warmers when you head out in the dead of winter.
"Find your soulmate"
The coyote's message fits in one sentence: "find your soulmate". Back in Springfield, Homer, seized by doubt, at first thinks he recognizes her elsewhere… before understanding that his soulmate is very much Marge. The coyote, for his part, was content to stir up trouble — leaving the ambiguity hanging to the very end: mystical vision, or plain hallucination?
