"A Milhouse Divided" (1996) sets off the downfall of Milhouse's father, fired from the Southern Cracker factory because a divorce would tarnish the brand's family image, reduced to selling his demo "Can I Borrow a Feeling?" out of his trunk while Luann builds a new life with a stuntman nicknamed Pyro. Who are Kirk and Luann Van Houten?
Kirk and Luann Van Houten are the parents of Milhouse, Bart's best friend. Kirk ran the Southern Cracker factory — owned by his father-in-law — while Luann kept house. A seemingly ordinary couple… until the blow-up.
🥂 Southern Cracker put food on Kirk's table right up until the divorce; at your place, crackers meet a far more peaceful end over drinks, next to glasses that leave no rings on the coffee table thanks to our Simpsons coasters.

The divorce and Kirk's downfall
Everything falls apart in the episode "A Milhouse Divided" (1996). During a dinner at Homer and Marge's, a game of Pictionary goes off the rails (Kirk cannot get anyone to guess the word "dignity"), and Luann demands a divorce. Kirk's downfall follows: fired from the factory (a divorce would tarnish the crackers' "family" image), he tries in vain to win Luann back by selling a pathetic demo out of his trunk, "Can I Borrow a Feeling?". Luann, for her part, builds a new life with a stuntman named "Pyro".

The couple's big comeback
Against all odds, Kirk and Luann end up remarrying, in a 2007 episode. Their honeymoon turns into slapstick tragedy: having fallen overboard on a cruise, they are presumed dead before being found alive on a desert island. A happy ending as improbable as the rest of their story.
