Lucius Sweet: the Simpsons' boxing promoter

CharacterLucius SweetBoxing

An impossible hairstyle, a shark's smile and a model the show names out loud. Lucius Sweet is Springfield's boxing promoter, Drederick Tatum's manager and Moe's former manager. In "The Homer They Fall" (season 8, 1996), he sets up his champion's comeback fight against Homer. This profile gathers the line in which Homer defuses the Don King resemblance himself, the real Don King's refusal to voice the part, the irony of an actor who had already played the promoter on screen, and the 100,000 dollars paid out despite a defeat in under one round.

Vertical hair, a salesman's smile and a resemblance the show owns out loud: Lucius Sweet is Springfield's boxing promoter.

Here is the profile of a two-episode character — whose casting is a joke in itself.

Who is Lucius Sweet?

Lucius Sweet is a boxing promoter and manager. He handles the career of Drederick Tatum, Springfield's heavyweight champion of the world — himself a Mike Tyson parody.

Beware the most widespread confusion: Sweet is neither a former champion nor a trainer. He is a businessman, on the other side of the table.

The parody the show admits to

The character is modeled on American promoter Don King — to the point that the script literally described him as someone "who looks and talks exactly like Don King".

Rather than pretend otherwise, the show defuses it itself: it is Homer who says on screen that Sweet is exactly as rich and as famous as Don King — and looks like him too. An admission of parody worth more than any legal precaution.

💵 As rich as Don King, according to Homer: a fortune like that would never fit in anyone's pocket. For your own cash, though, our Simpsons wallets do the job nicely, cards included.

Moe's former manager

The character has a past in Springfield: he was Moe Szyslak's boxing manager, back when the future bartender still got into the ring.

It is that old connection that brings Sweet back to the tavern, and that makes the episode work: the two men know each other, and Moe knows exactly who he is dealing with.

🩳 Moe traded the ring for the bar at the tavern, and boxing shorts went through the same career change, ending up as the underwear that still carries the name boxers. Our Simpsons boxers slip on under your jeans, far from the ropes and the spotlights.

The fight against Homer

The plot is simple: Tatum gets out of prison and is looking for a comeback fight. Sweet proposes Homer, whose particular gift — taking punishment without going down — has earned him a local reputation.

It is Moe who promises Sweet that the fight will last at least three rounds. Reality will be more brutal: Homer does not even last one round, and Moe pulls him out of the ring before the worst.

A good sport, Sweet reproaches Moe for not delivering the goods — and then pays him the promised 100,000 dollars anyway.

The irony of the casting

The best of the story is behind the scenes. The real Don King was offered the chance to voice himself — and turned it down.

The role then went to Paul Winfield, an actor who, barely a year earlier, had played the actual Don King in a TV movie about Mike Tyson. So the show hired, to parody Don King, the actor who had just played him for real.

Lucius Sweet's voice actors

In the original version, Lucius Sweet is voiced by Paul Winfield, as a guest, across his only two speaking roles — in season 8 and then season 9. The actor died in 2004, and no successor is documented.

On the French side, no actor is credited for the character.

Two episodes, an impossible hairstyle and a piece of casting that amounts to a private joke: Lucius Sweet is the show's most openly acknowledged parody. Proof that on The Simpsons, it is better to name the model than to pretend not to know him.

🧢 No cap could ever tame a hairdo as impossible as Sweet's; your own hair, on the other hand, falls into line under our Simpsons caps, even on the mornings when it has a mind of its own.
