Character
"Hoyvin-Glavin!" Behind that nasal cry hides John I.Q. Nerdelbaum Frink, Jr., professor at the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology and compulsive inventor: a death ray, a house on legs, hamburger earmuffs, a sarcasm detector, the "Frinkcoin" cryptocurrency… His model is openly acknowledged, Jerry Lewis's Julius Kelp (The Nutty Professor, 1963), who would himself voice the scientist's father in 2003. His debut, in 1991, still showed him as a rather sinister scientist. A clumsy genius, taken fully apart.
"Hoyvin-Glavin!" Behind that nasal cry hides Professor Frink, the wackiest scientist in Springfield. A genius inventor with thick glasses, an openly acknowledged tribute to Jerry Lewis, he is one of the most cult supporting characters in The Simpsons. A profile of a brilliant brain… and a completely eccentric one.

Who is Professor Frink?
Whose full name is John I.Q. Nerdelbaum Frink, Jr., Professor Frink is Springfield's official scientist: a compulsive inventor, a professor at the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology, and the brain the town calls to the rescue whenever a problem defies understanding. Blessed with a genius IQ (and a self-declared member of the local Mensa chapter), he offsets his brilliance with social awkwardness and boundless eccentricity.
Physically, he is recognisable among thousands: thick-lensed glasses, bow tie, white coat (sometimes a green jacket) and prominent teeth. Always polite and well-meaning, he belongs to that gallery of figures that gives Springfield all its flavour.
🧥 Frink sometimes swaps his white coat for a green jacket; in your wardrobe, that change-of-outfit role goes to our Simpsons jackets, bow tie optional.

"Hoyvin-Glavin!": Frink's language
Impossible to talk about Frink without his incredible phrasing. When he gets carried away, the scientist punctuates his explanations with nasal mutterings and his trademark cry of joy: "Hoyvin-Glavin!". The famous "glavin" comes in endless variations ("glayven", "gloyven"…), to the point of becoming the character's sonic signature.
Another irresistible tic: his sentences that shoot off in all directions, of the "with the… and then the… and the hey hey hey" variety. A hurried delivery that perfectly conveys a brain that always runs faster than its words.
A tribute to Jerry Lewis
Frink is not a generic mad scientist: he is a direct tribute to Professor Julius Kelp, played by Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor (1963). When Hank Azaria improvised the character's voice, he did an impression of Jerry Lewis; taken with it, the writers gradually brought Frink closer to his model (his prominent teeth, for instance, were added after his first appearances).
🪥 Frink's prominent teeth only arrived after his first appearances, when the writers brought him closer to Jerry Lewis's Professor Julius Kelp; you brush yours every morning, feet kept dry on our Simpsons bath mats.
The nod goes all the way: in the "Frinkenstein" segment of Springfield's famous television world — the episode Treehouse of Horror XIV (2003) — Jerry Lewis himself lent his voice to Frink's father, Professor Frink Sr. The circle is complete.

His wacky inventions
Frink is a compulsive inventor. Robots, improbable gadgets, machines meant to save Springfield: his creations almost always start from a good intention… before causing an even bigger catastrophe. That is the character's comic engine: the genius who complicates everything he touches.
Across the episodes, he has presented a veritable inventory of nonsense: a death ray (in his very first appearance), a house on legs meant to run away from burglars, hamburger earmuffs, a sarcasm detector that ends up exploding… and, more recently, his own cryptocurrency, the "Frinkcoin". All brilliant ideas on paper, catastrophic in practice.
This overflowing inventiveness echoes the scientific curiosity of a Lisa Simpson, in a distinctly zanier register.
❄️ Frink's inventions include hamburger earmuffs; to keep your ears warm this winter without a single hamburger around your head, our Simpsons beanies do the job nicely.
First appearance and evolution
Professor Frink appears for the first time in the episode "Old Money" ("Un amour de grand-père" in the French version, season 2, broadcast on 28 March 1991). An amusing fact: he was first presented there as a rather sinister scientist, almost a laboratory villain. It was Hank Azaria's vocal improvisation that tipped the character towards the endearing "mad scientist" we know, turning a potential antagonist into one of fans' favourite supporting characters, alongside figures such as Homer or Principal Skinner.
