Reverend Lovejoy: Springfield's jaded pastor

1012 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

CharacterReverend Lovejoy

A minister who hurries his flock out the door to get back to his model trains: Timothy Lovejoy, of the First Church of Springfield, stopped caring a long time ago. Here is where that discouragement comes from — Ned Flanders's endless calls over the smallest religious trifle — and why "In Marge We Trust" (1997), in which he saves that same Flanders from a baboon enclosure, gives him his faith back. His wife Helen and his daughter Jessica, Bart's first girlfriend, round out the family. A supporting role subtler than it looks.

"I've just stopped caring." That one sentence sums up the state of mind of Reverend Lovejoy, the most jaded minister in Springfield.

Disillusioned, hurried and far more passionate about his model trains than about his flock, Lovejoy is a delicious figure in the show. Here is his profile.

Who is Reverend Lovejoy?

Timothy Lovejoy is the minister of the First Church of Springfield. Once motivated, he has over the years become jaded, weary and frankly apathetic toward his congregation — whom he hurries out as fast as possible so he can get back to his real passion: his model trains. He is only one piece of the vast machinery that is religion in Springfield.

🚂 What Lovejoy loves more than his congregation fits into a scale model: his miniature model trains. Yours can be built piece by piece with our Simpsons building bricks, ready for a shelf in your room.

Flanders, his cross to bear

A good part of his disillusionment comes from one man: Ned Flanders, whose excessive devotion drives him to hound the minister on the phone over the smallest religious trifle. The show nonetheless gives Lovejoy a fine arc: in the episode "In Marge We Trust" (1997), having lost his faith when Marge replaces him as the parish's counselor, he finds it again by heroically rescuing… that same Flanders from a baboon enclosure at the zoo.

📱 Between Ned Flanders' calls over some religious trifle, the reverend's phone gets little rest; the main threat to yours is a fall when it slips out of your pocket, and that is exactly what our Simpsons iPhone cases are there for.

Helen and Jessica Lovejoy

The reverend is not alone. His wife, Helen Lovejoy, is the town's moralizing gossip, famous for her heartfelt cry: "Won't somebody please think of the children?". As for his daughter, Jessica Lovejoy, she turns out to be a manipulative little terror: she becomes Bart's first girlfriend, before pinning a church theft on him.

🥿 Helen Lovejoy made "Won't somebody please think of the children?" her heartfelt cry; in your home, thinking of them starts more simply with warm feet when the whole household crosses the tiled floor first thing in the morning, and that is the job of our Simpsons slippers.

Reverend Lovejoy's voice actors

In the original version, Lovejoy is voiced by Harry Shearer, who drew on an American televangelist to give him his voice. In the French version, he was played by Patrick Guillemin (seasons 1 to 9), then by Pierre Laurent.
