Ruth Powers: Marge's rebel neighbor

1008 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

CharacterRuth Powers

Four speaking episodes across more than thirty seasons, and yet a memory that sticks: the divorced neighbor in the red headband, moved into the Winfields' old house, single mother to Laura. Ruth Powers first appears in "New Kid on the Block" (1992), written by Conan O'Brien, before taking Marge along in "Marge on the Lam" (1993), a Thelma & Louise parody that ends in a chase with Clancy Wiggum. Voiced by Pamela Reed, she remains, by the showrunner's own admission, a tremendous waste. A look back at a missed opportunity.

She moves in next door to the Simpsons, gives Marge one night of freedom and then vanishes into the scenery. Ruth Powers is the neighbor Springfield forgot to write.

Four real appearances in more than thirty seasons — but one all-time episode. Here is her profile.

Who is Ruth Powers?

Ruth Powers is the Simpsons' divorced neighbor: she buys the house next door to 742 Evergreen Terrace, formerly the Winfields'. A single mother to a teenage daughter, Laura, she is recognizable by her red headband, worn almost every time. Her ex-husband is never shown on screen.

📿 A red headband, and Ruth stands out from afar: one signature accessory is all it takes to define a look, and our Simpsons necklaces play exactly that role on yours.

The neighbor from elsewhere

She first appears in "New Kid on the Block" (1992), an episode written by Conan O'Brien — the same writer behind "Marge vs. the Monorail". The episode also marks the debut of her daughter Laura, with whom Bart falls hopelessly in love… without it being returned, the girl preferring a school bully.

"Marge on the Lam", The Simpsons' Thelma & Louise

Her great moment is the episode "Marge on the Lam" (1993), an openly acknowledged parody of Thelma & Louise. Ruth takes Marge on a night out that gets out of hand: the two women end up chased by Clancy Wiggum's police, in a getaway that became cult. For Marge, it is a rare gulp of freedom; for the show, one of its finest portraits of a woman.

Ruth Powers's voice actors

In the original version, Ruth is voiced by actress Pamela Reed (seen in Kindergarten Cop and Parks and Recreation), across her four speaking episodes. The season 5 showrunner acknowledged, in a DVD commentary, that the actress was excellent and that he could not explain why the show had not used her more.

🩳 Just four speaking episodes in all, and even the season 5 showrunner couldn't explain, in a DVD commentary, why the show didn't use Pamela Reed more: in your closet, our Simpsons shorts have no reason to suffer the same fate once the first warm days arrive.
