UniverseBouvier familySimpson family

Marge did not arrive alone in Homer's life: she was born Marjorie Bouvier, daughter of Clancy and Jacqueline, younger sister of the twins Patty and Selma. Here you will meet a grouchy matriarch with the tallest hair in the show, courted by Grampa in season 5, and two chain-smokers from the DMV — one of whom, Patty, comes out, while the other, Selma, racks up marriages before adopting Ling. The surname, meanwhile, is a tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy, née Bouvier. An in-law family whose every connection you will finally have straight.

Behind Marge's blue beehive hides a whole lineage: a mother with the tallest hair in Springfield and two chain-smoking sisters who have sworn to destroy Homer.

Welcome to the Bouviers. Here is the profile of Marge's family.

Who are the Bouviers?

Marge was born Marjorie Bouvier. Her family consists of her parents, Clancy and Jacqueline Bouvier, and her older twin sisters, Patty and Selma. Beware a common confusion: Marge's father, Clancy Bouvier, has nothing to do with Clancy Wiggum, the police chief — they are two entirely distinct Clancys.

Jacqueline, the matriarch

Marge's mother, Jacqueline Bouvier, is a grouchy, critical and pessimistic grandmother, recognizable by the tallest hair in the entire show. She even had an unexpected romance: in a season 5 episode, Grampa Simpson courts her. A late-life flirtation between the two elders of the Simpson and Bouvier families.

Patty and Selma, the twins

Marge's two sisters, inveterate smokers with gravelly voices and employees at the DMV, cordially loathe Homer. But do not mix them up: Patty is openly a lesbian — one of the first recurring characters to come out on the show. Selma, for her part, collects marriages (to Sideshow Bob, Troy McClure and many others) and eventually adopts a little girl, Ling.

A nod to Jackie Kennedy

The name "Bouvier" was not chosen at random: it is a tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy's maiden name (born Jacqueline Bouvier). The surname was chosen by the show's creator, Matt Groening, who also named Marge's mother "Jacqueline" — completing the nod. Notably, in the original version it is the same actress, Julie Kavner, who voices every Bouvier woman.

🎂 For Homer, marrying Marge also meant marrying Jacqueline, Patty and Selma; on the day your own in-laws come over to watch you blow out your candles, our Simpsons birthday party supplies will at least make sure the decorations are on your side.
