Who is Barney Gumble?
Barney is the designated drunk of Springfield and the best friend of Homer Simpson. The most devoted customer at Moe's Tavern — to the point of sleeping there — he considers the bartender his second-best friend. His signature? A legendary loud belch, now one of the show's running gags.

😴 Barney is such a regular at Moe's Tavern that he ends up sleeping there; for your own nights, spent in your bed rather than at the bar, our Simpsons pajamas are the dress code.
A former top student
Hard to believe, but as a teenager Barney was a brilliant student, bound for Harvard. His downfall is told in a flashback in the episode "Mr. Plow" (Monsieur Chasse-neige in French, season 4): it is Homer who gives him his first taste of beer, the night before the college entrance exams — setting off the alcoholism that would define the character. A wasted destiny for which Homer bears part of the blame.

Unsuspected talents
Behind the drunk hide astonishing gifts. Barney has a superb tenor voice, which earns him a place in the barbershop quartet "The Be Sharps" alongside Homer, Apu and Principal Skinner. He also turns out to be an award-winning filmmaker: in "A Star Is Burns" (season 6), his autobiographical film wins the first Springfield Film Festival.
He even gets a genuine redemption in "Days of Wine and D'oh'ses" (season 11): he stops drinking, takes flying lessons and rescues Bart and Lisa from a forest fire at the controls of a helicopter — before transferring his addiction to… caffè latte.
Barney's voice actors
In the original version, Barney is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, also the voice of Homer, Grampa and Krusty; his belch reportedly comes from a single recording, reused throughout the show. In the French version, he was played by Patrick Guillemin (seasons 1 to 9), then by Pierre Laurent.
