Frank Grimes: Homer Simpson's nemesis

1176 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

CharacterFrank Grimes

A single episode was all it took to make "Grimey" the most tragic figure in Springfield. Hired at the plant after a television report on his hard life, orphaned at four and self-taught by correspondence course, Frank Grimes cannot bear watching Homer get everything without effort and declares him his "enemy". Then come his deliberate electrocution, Lovejoy's eulogy sabotaged by a "Change the channel, Marge!", and the appearance of his avenging son in 2002. Enough to kill off the idea that Homer killed him.

For the length of a single episode, one man embodied the "real world" against the absurdity of Homer Simpson. Frank Grimes, alias "Grimey", is one of the most tragic characters in the show.

A relentless worker, upstanding and eaten up by frustration, he lived through a single episode — but what an episode. Here is the profile of Homer's sworn enemy.

Who is Frank Grimes?

Frank Grimes is a new employee at the nuclear power plant, hired after Mr. Burns saw a television report on his hard life. Quickly demoted to Sector 7-G, he ends up sharing a desk with Homer Simpson. Homer immediately nicknames him "Grimey" — a nickname Grimes himself hates.

The model new employee: self-taught the hard way, and immediately scandalized by the existence of Homer Simpson.

☕ In Sector 7-G, Grimes doesn't even get a desk of his own and has to share Homer's; nobody fights you for space on yours, and our Simpsons coasters hold your mug there without leaving a ring on the surface.

The self-made man against Homer

Grimes embodies meritocracy taken to the extreme: abandoned by his parents at four, he taught himself everything and earned his degree by correspondence course ("in nuclear physics, with a minor in determination", as the episode jokes).

So when he discovers that Homer has a house, two cars, a wife and children without the slightest effort — while sleeping through his job as safety inspector — rage takes over. He solemnly declares Homer his "enemy".

🚗 Having two cars is one of the perks Homer got without lifting a finger, and one Grimes just can't stomach; as for yours, when it's baking in a parking lot in midsummer, it at least deserves our Simpsons sun shades behind the windshield.

The tragic end of "Grimey"

The story ends badly. In the grip of a breakdown, Grimes decides to ape Homer's carelessness: he grabs high-voltage cables with his bare hands, declaring that he does not need safety gear. He dies electrocuted — an end he brings on himself; Homer has nothing to do with it.

The height of irony comes at the funeral: during Reverend Lovejoy's eulogy ("Grimey, as he liked to be called" — which is untrue), Homer, dozing off, mumbles "Change the channel, Marge!", setting off general hilarity.

Frank Grimes Jr., the revenge

The character gets an unexpected sequel: in a 2002 episode, Frank Grimes Jr., presented as his illegitimate son, turns up to avenge his father, whom he believes Homer killed. He is finally exposed with the help of Sideshow Bob. A purely parodic device — Grimes having been established as a loner with no family.

Frank Grimes's voice actors

A notable fact: rather than a guest star, it is in-house performer Hank Azaria who plays Grimes in the original version, modeling his delivery on actor William H. Macy. In the French version, the character is voiced by Patrick Guillemin, one of the recurring voices of the early seasons.
