Character
Two blue-collar workers from sector 7G, a drink in hand at Moe's, in the background since 1990: Lenny Leonard and Carl Carlson are never apart. Here we detail Carl's master's degree in nuclear physics, his Icelandic roots at the heart of "The Saga of Carl" (season 24, 2013), their appearance among the Stonecutters, and the running gag of a Homer incapable of telling them apart. On the voice side: Harry Shearer for Lenny, Hank Azaria then Alex Désert for Carl since 2020. The "couple" question finds its answer here.
You never introduce one without the other: Lenny and Carl form the most inseparable duo in Springfield. Homer's colleagues and best friends at the nuclear plant, fixtures of Moe's Tavern, they have been everywhere in the background since the very first season. A profile of two inseparable companions.

Who are Lenny and Carl?
Lenford "Lenny" Leonard and Carl Carlson are two employees of the Springfield nuclear power plant (sector 7G), colleagues and above all Homer's best friends — along with Barney. They are invariably found together, drink in hand, at Moe's Tavern. Carl is the calmer, deadpan one, Lenny the simpler, good-natured one.

An inseparable duo
Lenny and Carl's defining feature is that they are almost never seen without each other. Their fused friendship is a recurring comic device, pushed to the absurd, with a host of knowing nods the writers own up to for the sake of humour. Be careful, though: in the show's canon, the two men are presented as heterosexual — the idea of a real "couple" is mainly a fan reading.
Carl, the most educated of the bunch
Behind his look of an ordinary employee, Carl is the trio's brain: he even holds a master's degree in nuclear physics — a delicious mismatch for a blue-collar worker at Mr. Burns' plant. The show also gave him roots: Carl is presented as of Icelandic origin, the whole subject of the episode "The Saga of Carl" (season 24), in which he sets off to trace his family's history in Iceland.
❄️ In "The Saga of Carl", Carl goes all the way to Iceland to trace his family's history, not exactly a trip you make bareheaded; closer to home, our Simpsons beanies take over on your morning commute once winter sets in.
"Lenny is white, Carl is black"
The duo's tastiest running gag comes down to Homer himself: unable to tell them apart, he mixes them up constantly. The peak is reached in a famous gag where Homer suddenly "realises", astonished, that Lenny is white and Carl is black. A way for the show to mock its own gallery of interchangeable background characters.

🏷️ Homer is reduced to a cheat sheet scrawled on his hand just to stop mixing up Lenny and Carl; to spot your water bottle or laptop at a glance among everyone else's, our Simpsons stickers do the same job, without the ink on your fingers.
Trivia and dubbing
The two companions appear from the first season (1990) and even feature among the Stonecutters, the secret society of the episode "Homer the Great". On the voice side, Lenny is voiced in the original version by Harry Shearer. Carl was played by Hank Azaria until 2019, before being handed in 2020 to actor Alex Désert — the production having decided to stop having non-white characters voiced by white actors.
