CharacterMiss Hoover
A case of Lyme disease she never had: that is the claim to fame of Lisa's teacher. Elizabeth Hoover teaches second grade, to Lisa and to Ralph Wiggum, and is emphatically not Bart's teacher — that is Edna Krabappel, whom Régine Teyssot also voices in French. Add the cult exchange between Ralph and Janey and "Lisa's Substitute" (1991), in which Dustin Hoffman voices Mr. Bergstrom under the pseudonym "Sam Etic". A confusion settled for good.
Jaded, disillusioned and famous for an illness… she imagined: Miss Hoover is the teacher who faces Lisa Simpson day after day.
Often confused with her colleague Edna, she nonetheless has her own class and her own cult gag. Here is her profile.

Who is Miss Hoover?
Elizabeth Hoover is the second-grade teacher at Springfield Elementary School — the class of Lisa Simpson, but also of Ralph Wiggum. A recurring character, she embodies the jaded, exhausted teacher, forever oscillating between engagement and surrender.

🧱 Lisa and Ralph Wiggum spend second grade facing Miss Hoover's alphabet frieze; at home, a child the same age learns as much with their hands as from a wall of letters, and our Simpsons building bricks give them plenty to build.
Not to be confused with Edna Krabappel
Beware the trap: Miss Hoover is not Bart's teacher. It is Edna Krabappel who teaches Bart (in fourth grade), while Hoover looks after Lisa. They really are two distinct characters, two different classes — even if, in the French version, they share the same actress, which keeps the confusion alive for viewers.
The Lyme disease gag
Miss Hoover's most cult moment? She takes sick leave, convinced she has contracted Lyme disease. On her return, she admits that her illness was in fact psychosomatic — "a little of both", as she puts it. What follows is an all-time exchange in which Ralph asks "Does that mean you were crazy?", and his classmate Janey replies: "No, it means she was faking it."
🤒 Miss Hoover took sick leave for a case of Lyme disease that turned out to be psychosomatic; on the day a real cold keeps you in bed, our Simpsons pajamas make the sick day cozier.
"Lisa's Substitute" and Mr. Bergstrom
It is during that very leave that the episode "Lisa's Substitute" (1991) takes place, one of the most moving in the show. Miss Hoover's replacement, the inspiring Mr. Bergstrom, is voiced in the original version by none other than Dustin Hoffman — credited under the mischievous pseudonym "Sam Etic".
Miss Hoover's voice actors
In the original version, Miss Hoover is voiced by Maggie Roswell (briefly replaced by Marcia Mitzman Gaven between 1999 and 2002). In the French version, it is Régine Teyssot who lends her voice — the same actress who voices Edna Krabappel, where the original uses two distinct performers.
