CharacterKrustyMr. Teeny
Krusty always talks about his "monkey": he is in fact a chimpanzee, tailless, like his mother Toot-Toot, revealed in season 17. This profile retraces Mr. Teeny's first appearance in "Like Father, Like Clown" (season 3, 1991), where he is not even named, the dark gag of the successive Teenys replaced without changing the name, and the day he tears Bart out of a vest of explosives in "Day of the Jackanapes". Dan Castellaneta voices his shrieks, as he does Krusty: a mute character who says a great deal about show business.
A chimpanzee in a costume, a cigarette between his lips and a boss who replaces him without warning: Mr. Teeny is the most mistreated mascot on the Krusty Show.
Behind the animal gag hides one of the show's most grating devices. A profile.

Who is Mr. Teeny?
Mr. Teeny — "M. Teeny" in the French version — is the star animal of the Krusty Show, the most watched children's programme in Springfield. He is seen performing routines, roller-skating and, very often, smoking.
His first appearance as recorded by the encyclopaedias is "Like Father, Like Clown" (season 3, 1991). A delicious detail: he is not even named there. At that point he is just a chimpanzee on wheels whom Krusty dismisses with a "go wait for me in the car".
Monkey or chimpanzee?
Krusty always talks about his "monkey", but the animal drawn on screen is very much a chimpanzee: he has no tail, and his mother is likewise described as a female chimpanzee.
The ambiguity goes back to his very beginnings: as early as 1991, attentive viewers were already flagging the missing tail as an "animation error". In reality there was no error — just a boss with a loose grip on zoology.

The show's darkest gag
Here is the device that makes the character unforgettable: there is not one Mr. Teeny, but several. Krusty wears his animals out and replaces them season after season without ever changing the name, the way you would replace a prop.
🧦 Krusty wears out one Mr. Teeny after another and replaces him without ever changing the name: in your drawer, that is simply what happens to socks, and the fresh pair taking over can just as well come from our Simpsons socks.
The thing is so well established that the show's French-language encyclopaedia lists the entry as "M. Teeny (I, II, III and IV)". The gag sums up all on its own the cynicism of the entertainment industry as the show depicts it — a theme Sideshow Mel, the same clown's human sidekick, knows well.
The day he saves Bart
The character's great moment comes in "Day of the Jackanapes" (season 12, 2001). Sideshow Bob, out of prison, has hypnotised Bart and fitted him with a vest of explosives meant to blow Krusty up live on air.
It is Mr. Teeny who spots the explosives and hurls them into the network executives' office, saving both the child and the clown. The resident monkey becomes, for the length of a scene, the hero of the episode.
Another memorable appearance: in "Trilogy of Error", he acts as a chauffeur and drops Lisa off at the wrong school. The episode's final shot belongs to him — and his line arrives, as always, via a subtitle.
🎒 In "Trilogy of Error", Mr. Teeny takes the wheel and drops Lisa off at the wrong school; on your own way to class, our Simpsons backpacks carry your notebooks and pencil case, and you are the one who knows which school to get off at.
Toot-Toot, his mother
The show even gave him a family: in "Bart Has Two Mommies" (season 17), we meet Toot-Toot, an elderly female chimpanzee who is none other than Mr. Teeny's mother. A kinship that adds a layer of melancholy to an already thoroughly battered character.
Mr. Teeny's voice actors
In the original version, his shrieks are the work of Dan Castellaneta — that is, the actor who voices Krusty himself. The clown and his monkey therefore come literally out of the same throat.
Mr. Teeny does not speak: he lets out chimpanzee shrieks, and his rare punchlines appear as on-screen subtitles. On the French side, no actor is credited by any reliable source — which, for a character with no dialogue, is hardly surprising.
🪧 Mr. Teeny never says a word: his rare punchlines show up as on-screen subtitles. At home, our Simpsons metal signs work the same way, with a written message hanging on the wall that speaks without a voice.
