A bone planted in a green mane, a slide whistle instead of dialogue: Melvin Van Horne, alias Sideshow Mel, has been Krusty the Clown's official sidekick since season 2 (1990). You will learn that he succeeded Sideshow Bob after his imprisonment, that he does not speak on air but expresses himself off camera in a cultivated, theatrical voice, that he won an award for his Biff in Death of a Salesman, and that he shares his life with Barbara. Dan Castellaneta lends him his voice: enough to rehabilitate the most devoted of supporting players.
A bone in his hair, a slide whistle instead of answers and unshakeable devotion: Sideshow Mel is Krusty the Clown's faithful sidekick. Behind this comic character, though, hides a cultivated actor and a loyal servant — the exact opposite of his notorious predecessor. A profile of Springfield's most devoted sidekick.

Who is Sideshow Mel?
Whose real name is Melvin Van Horne, Sideshow Mel is the official sidekick of Krusty the Clown on his television show. Dressed in a loincloth, topped with a tall green mane run through with a large bone, he is one of the most recognisable supporting characters in Springfield — and one of the most endearing.
🩲 In front of Krusty's cameras, Mel proudly owns the loincloth; under your jeans, our Simpsons boxers cover the same area, with more fabric and far fewer spectators.

Sideshow Bob's successor
Mel has not always been Krusty's right-hand man. He in fact replaced Sideshow Bob, the former sidekick, after Bob was sent to prison for trying to frame Krusty for armed robbery. A heavy legacy to carry: where Bob plotted in the shadows, Mel chose the path of loyalty.
The whistle and the bone: his signatures
On Krusty's set, Sideshow Mel does not say a word: he "speaks" exclusively with a slide whistle, punctuating the clown's antics with comic glissandos. His other trademark? The famous bone planted in his hair. Two visual and sonic gimmicks that make him instantly identifiable, even in the background — and he shares the bill with the set's other silent resident, the chimpanzee Mr. Teeny.
🧵 For Mel, the bone planted in his hair works as a visual signature; sewn onto your jacket or bag, one of our Simpsons patches does the same job, with nothing to stick in your hair.
A classical actor under the make-up
The character's tastiest running gag: off air, Mel speaks in a measured, cultivated and highly theatrical voice, worlds away from his whistle. A classically trained actor, he has even won an award for his performance as Biff in Death of a Salesman. Real talent… squandered clowning behind an ungrateful clown.
Loyal, unlike some
That is the whole point of the character: unlike Sideshow Bob, who dreamed of getting rid of Krusty, Sideshow Mel remains a loyal and devoted employee. He may grumble, complain about his lot or find Krusty ungrateful, but he never betrays him. On the private side, he is known to have a partner, Barbara. A decent man, in short, stuck in a ridiculous costume.
🌙 Loyal to the end, Mel stays stuck in a ridiculous costume, serving a Krusty he finds ungrateful; at home in the evening, you at least get the luxury of swapping your daytime outfit for our Simpsons pajamas.
