CharacterRabbi Krustofsky

Twenty-five years without speaking to his son, guilty of preferring the red nose to the prayer book: Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky is Krusty's father. Their reconciliation fills "Like Father, Like Clown" (1991), a parody of The Jazz Singer in which Bart clinches it by citing Sammy Davis Jr. Add Jackie Mason, an ordained rabbi himself and a shared 1992 Emmy, the radio sparring with Reverend Lovejoy, then the character's death in 2014 on a word left hanging. A family drama behind the makeup.

He shut the door on his son for twenty-five years, guilty of preferring the red nose to the prayer book. Rabbi Krustofsky is the father of Krusty the Clown.

Behind the most unyielding character in Springfield hides a reconciliation that became legend. Here is his profile.

Who is Rabbi Krustofsky?

Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky is an Orthodox rabbi in Springfield and, above all, the father of Krusty the Clown. Take care not to confuse them: the father is Hyman; the son is in fact called Herschel Shmoikel Pinchas Yerucham Krustofsky. The surname is written "Krustofsky" or "Krustofski" depending on the source.

🛁 Hyman the father, Herschel Shmoikel Pinchas Yerucham the son, and a surname spelled Krustofsky or Krustofski: in that family, everything invites confusion. In your bathroom, our Simpsons towels at least keep you from mixing up yours with your dad's.

The disowned son: "Like Father, Like Clown"

His story unfolds in the episode "Like Father, Like Clown" (1991), a parody of The Jazz Singer. We learn there that the rabbi disowned his son for twenty-five years for choosing comedy over the religious path — and it is in this episode that Krusty's Jewishness is invented. It is Bart and Lisa who set out to reconcile them, with Bart winning the rabbi over by citing the example of Sammy Davis Jr.

Jackie Mason, a rabbi for a rabbi

The casting is a stroke of genius: in the original version, the rabbi is voiced by comedian Jackie Mason, himself… an ordained rabbi before he took to the stage. His performance earned him an Emmy Award in 1992 — a shared award, though, split that year with five other performers from the show. The rabbi and Reverend Lovejoy also spar on a recurring radio show, "Gabbin' About God".

🎖️ Jackie Mason shared his 1992 Emmy with five other performers from the show; an honor that's yours alone is better sewn onto your jacket, and that's exactly what our Simpsons patches are for.

The character's death

Rabbi Krustofsky dies in the episode "Clown in the Dumps", the season 26 opener (2014). He expires mid-sentence, his last word being a simple "Eh…", setting off a deep crisis of self-examination in his son. Actor Jackie Mason himself died in 2021.

🌙 An "Eh…" left hanging as the very last word, and Krusty ends up questioning everything in "Clown in the Dumps"; on the nights when you're the one mulling things over, our Simpsons duvet covers at least dress the bed you toss and turn in.
