A Guinness world record, 810 guests counted in 2020: Springfield is the biggest red carpet on television. The most legendary cameo remains Michael Jackson's in 1991, credited as "John Jay Smith" for Leon Kompowsky's speaking voice — the singing went to impersonator Kipp Lennon. You also meet Elizabeth Taylor behind Maggie's first word, Leonard Nimoy, Tony Blair, and the McCartneys, who only agreed on the condition that Lisa stay vegetarian. Enough to separate the real cameos from the myths.
A bricklayer convinced he is Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor's voice for a baby's first word, a prime minister recorded in ten minutes: for more than thirty years, Springfield has been the biggest red carpet on television.
But behind the most famous cameos hide almost as many legends as truths. Here is the guide.

A world record
The Simpsons hold a Guinness world record for the most guest stars in an animated series — the official entry counted 810 in 2020. From Maggie to Homer, nearly every big name in culture has passed through Springfield at some point.
📌 The official Guinness entry counted 810 guests passing through Springfield in 2020: your own hall of fame comes together on a smaller scale, on your denim jacket or messenger bag, with our Simpsons pins, added one at a time.
The show has also gone out to meet other universes, across a few crossovers that stayed famous.Michael Jackson, the most famous cameo
The most legendary cameo remains Michael Jackson's, in 1991: he lends his speaking voice to Leon Kompowsky, an institutionalized man who believes he is the star, and is credited under the pseudonym "John Jay Smith". But beware the persistent myths: the singing is not Jackson's but that of an impersonator, Kipp Lennon (contractual obligations oblige); and the song "Do the Bartman" was not written by Jackson, contrary to legend. The episode was also withdrawn from circulation by the producers in 2019. Against the grain of these pseudonyms, Harvey Fierstein fully owned his name in the credits for the role of Karl, Homer's secretary.
🚿 Jackson only does the talking, and it's impersonator Kipp Lennon who sings in his place: in your shower, you're the resident impersonator, safely hidden behind our Simpsons shower curtains.
Playing yourself or voicing a character
You have to distinguish two kinds of cameo. Some stars play themselves (Leonard Nimoy, Tony Blair, Paul and Linda McCartney, Lady Gaga, U2…); others lend their voice to a fictional character — such as Dustin Hoffman, the substitute teacher Lisa falls for, credited under the pseudonym "Sam Etic". Michael Jackson in fact belongs to that second category.
Nimoy, Taylor, Blair: the cult cameos
The list of great moments is long. Leonard Nimoy (Spock) appears twice as himself. Elizabeth Taylor lends her voice to Maggie's very first word, "Daddy". Tony Blair, then the sitting prime minister, plays himself. And Paul and Linda McCartney only agree to appear on one condition: that Lisa stay vegetarian for the rest of the show. So many cameos that make Krusty's show and The Simpsons a genuine pop pantheon. Johnny Cash, for his part, lent his voice to a spirit coyote.
☕ It took Elizabeth Taylor's voice to deliver Maggie's very first word, "Daddy"; to say it to your own dad, a breakfast coffee served in one of our Simpsons mugs does the trick, no casting required.
