UniverseHalloweenTreehouse of Horror
Every fall, the show lets itself kill its characters with no consequences whatsoever: welcome to Treehouse of Horror. This feature goes back to 25 October 1990, the date of the first episode, and details the format — three short, non-canon stories per season — the treehouse that gives the original version its name, "The Raven" after Poe carried by the voice of James Earl Jones, then "The Shinning", "Time and Punishment" and "Citizen Kang". Not forgetting Kang and Kodos and the credits full of horror names dreamed up by Al Jean. Thirty years of yellow nightmares, put back in order.
Every fall, Springfield tips into horror — for the length of one episode. Treehouse of Horror is the most eagerly awaited Halloween appointment in the show.
Three short stories, completely unhinged and non-canon: for more than thirty years, these specials have given The Simpsons wild freedom. Here is the complete guide to a cult tradition.

What is Treehouse of Horror?
"Treehouse of Horror" is the name of The Simpsons' Halloween specials (called "Simpson Horror Show" in France and "Spécial d'Halloween" in Quebec). The format never changes: one episode per season, made up of three short, self-contained stories mixing horror, science fiction and the fantastic.
Their great particularity: these episodes are entirely non-canon. Characters can die there, transform or travel through time with no consequence whatsoever for the rest of the show — which gives the writers total freedom.
🎭 Non-canon by design, no transformation ever outlasts the end of a Treehouse of Horror story; for your own Halloween night, our Simpsons costumes play by the same rule: a full transformation for the evening, back to normal the next morning.

The origins of the tradition
The tradition starts in season 2, with a first episode aired on 25 October 1990. Its opening device is what gives the show its original name: Bart, Lisa and Maggie are gathered in the treehouse in the yard telling each other scary stories, while Homer eavesdrops.
🛏️ No need for a treehouse in the yard to get scared together: at home, the obvious shelter from scary stories is still under your duvet, especially once it's tucked into one of our Simpsons duvet covers.
That first installment already contains three segments that stayed famous, including "The Raven" — an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's poem in which Homer plays the narrator and Bart, as the raven, repeats only a sinister "Nevermore". In the original version, actor James Earl Jones lends his deep voice to all three stories.
The most cult segments
Over the years, Treehouse of Horror has piled up memorable parodies. A few high points:
- "The Shinning" and "Time & Punishment" (Treehouse of Horror V, 1994) — the parody of Kubrick's The Shining and the time travel of a toaster turned time machine, gathered in the same episode.
- "Citizen Kang" (Treehouse of Horror VII, 1996) — in which the aliens Kang and Kodos abduct the American presidential candidates to seize power, in a parody of Citizen Kane.
The aliens Kang and Kodos are in fact the specials' true through line: present from the very first episode, they come back every year to greet the fans.
⌚ In "Time & Punishment", a simple toaster becomes a time machine; on your wrist, our Simpsons watches just tell the time, with no risk of sending you off to another era.

The gag of the frightening names
Another delicious tradition: the credits. From the second Treehouse of Horror (1991) on, the whole crew and cast are credited under horror nicknames — an idea from writer Al Jean, inspired by old horror comics. A detail that does not appear in the very first episode, but that has since become essential.
