UniverseDuff Beer

Served on tap at Moe's, Duff has been parodying cheap American lagers since the first season, undying slogan included. Here you will find the brewery gag, where Duff, Duff Lite and Duff Dry all come out of a single pipe, the tour of Duff Gardens, a Busch Gardens parody where Lisa proclaims herself "the lizard queen", and the real-world story: Groening long opposed to any actual Duff, bootleg brewers, lawsuits in Australia, then a licensed beer in 2013. Enough to see a whole advertising satire in one can.

Cheap, hammered by advertising and drunk from the can at Moe's, Duff is Springfield's official fuel.

Behind the foam hides a ferocious satire of beer marketing — and a real legal battle. Here is the breakdown.

What is Duff beer?

Duff is the fictional beer brand emblematic of The Simpsons: the favorite drink of Homer and Barney, served on tap at Moe's bar. A parody of a cheap, over-marketed American lager, it appears as early as the first season, with its undying slogan: "Can't Get Enough of That Wonderful Duff".

The single-pipe gag

The most ferocious Duff gag comes in an episode where the brewery is toured: it turns out that Duff, Duff Lite and Duff Dry — sold as three distinct products — in fact all come out of… the same single pipe. A crystal-clear satire of marketing that invents differences where there are none.

📱 At Duff, all it takes is a new label to sell three beers flowing from the same pipe; your Samsung, identical to millions of others when it leaves the factory, can get a new look too with one of our Simpsons Samsung cases, which does a real job on top of that: it protects your phone.

The gag that sums up the brand: Duff, Duff Lite and Duff Dry actually come out of the same vat.

Duff Gardens and Duffman

The brand even has its own theme park: Duff Gardens, an enormous advertising vehicle parodying the Busch Gardens parks (owned by a real brewer). There you meet the "Seven Duffs", mascots aping the Seven Dwarfs — and it is there that Lisa, having drunk the water from a ride, hallucinates and proclaims herself "the lizard queen". On the promotional side, Duff above all has its bellowing mascot, Duffman, who appeared much later, around season 9.

💦 At Duff Gardens, Lisa drinks the water from a ride and proclaims herself "the lizard queen"; when you're the one stepping off a water ride soaked, one of our Simpsons towels tucked in your bag dries you off, without the slightest hallucination.

The real story of Duff

The real story outdoes the fiction. For a long time, Matt Groening refused to allow a real Duff beer, fearing it would encourage minors to drink. The result: several brewers produced it without authorization, setting off high-profile lawsuits — notably in Australia in the 1990s. It was only much later, in 2013, that a genuine officially licensed Duff finally appeared, at the Universal Studios parks.
