Under the blue suit with the red cape there is nobody — or rather anybody. The running gag holds that "Duffman can never die, only the actors who play him can", hence a parade of shifting identities: Barry Duffman, Barry Huffman, Larry, Sid. Add the original inspiration, Budweiser's "Bud Man", the "Oh, yeah!" borrowed from Yello via Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and the talent contest won by Homer. Right up to the character's retirement, in early 2026.
A skin-tight suit, a red cape, a belt of cans and a thunderous "Oh, yeah!": Duffman is the wildest mascot in Springfield. Behind this advertising hero, though, hides a brilliant running gag and a few well-kept secrets. A profile of the official ambassador of Duff beer.

Who is Duffman?
Duffman is the advertising mascot and spokesman for the famous Duff beer. Always game to liven up a party, a celebration or an opening, he embodies the energy (and the marketing) of Springfield residents' favourite brand. His inspiration? "Bud Man", a real former mascot of Budweiser beer.
🎈 Duffman shows up whenever the brand has a party or an opening to liven up; on your birthday, you don't need the mascot in person: our Simpsons birthday party supplies set the mood in his place.
"Oh, yeah!": an unforgettable mascot
Impossible to mistake him for anyone else. His outfit — a blue suit with the Duff logo, red cape, dark glasses, cap and belt of cans — is iconic. But his real signature is his rallying cry: an "Oh, yeah!" delivered with great thrusts of the hips. A nod to the song "Oh Yeah" by the band Yello, made famous by the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The secret behind the costume
Here is the character's best gag: Duffman is not one person, but a costume worn by interchangeable employees. Hence the cult running gag: "Duffman can never die — only the actors who play him can". A grim humour that gives the character all his flavour, much appreciated by the regulars of Moe's Tavern, starting with Barney Gumble.
🎭 Duffman outlives every actor who plays him because the whole character lives in the outfit; the day it's your turn to step into a new role, our Simpsons costumes work on the same principle: all you have to do is put one on.
The man behind the mask
The name of the man in the costume changes from one episode to the next — Barry Duffman, Barry Huffman, Larry, Sid… — to keep the joke going. The episode "Waiting for Duffman" digs into the subject: when the reigning Duffman, Barry Huffman, retires after an injury, it is Homer who wins the role in a talent contest. He is then required to stay sober — he is even made to believe an anti-alcohol chip has been implanted in him… before he discovers that the chip never existed: a simple bluff to keep him from drinking.
☕ To keep Homer sober under the Duffman costume, they make him believe in an anti-alcohol chip that never existed; you stick to coffee without anyone having to bluff you, and our Simpsons insulated tumblers keep it hot until your last sip.

A character turned cult figure
On television from season 9 (1997) — though already sketched on a San Diego Comic-Con programme in 1994 — Duffman quickly became a cult figure of the show. Voiced by Hank Azaria in the original version, he passed into posterity with his antics. Proof of his status: a recent episode (early 2026) went as far as to retire him, judged "outdated"… without quite daring to make him disappear.
